On Our Way!
We are embarking on a big adventure this fall. Last Thanksgiving as I was driving back to Charleston from the Outer Banks, I started thinking what if? What if we traveled a bit? What if we could make that happen? What if the kids got to spend weeks or months out of their comfort zones, out of their covid bubble, out experiencing life in other countries or states? I threw the idea out to the kids' dad, my co-parent, and he was not as enthusiastic as I was but he was open to exploring the idea.
We are privileged in many ways that this was even an idea to entertain. My co-parent works remotely as a software engineer lead so has flexibility to move around and a salary that affords things like travel. I was already homeschooling the kids (who are 7) so we didn't have to decide whether or not to pull them out of school. We were already considering moving back north from Charleston. Our relationship is in a place where we have a good friendship and know how to travel together. We don't own homes and renting two homes with all the utilities for each is more expensive than Airbnb-ing in many parts of Europe where we were looking to visit. It felt a bit like the stars aligned for this opportunities so we decided to go for it!
When our leases were up, we packed all our stuff in a POD and over the next few months (or more, we've planned through December for now) we will be spending time traveling. Some travels I will be solo parenting, some will be all together. Some will be to visit family in my hometown, our old city of Boston, Charleston, Philadelphia, and London. Some are re-visits to places we love and want to explore further, some are travel bucket list places, and some are new to us and somewhat random!
Join us on our adventures as I share the ups and downs of travel with kids, how we are homeschooling on the road, and all kinds of play-related travel things like kid-friendly places to visit, really amazing playgrounds, and which toys are keeping the kids busy on long travel days.
xoxo,
Jess
